Think of it as a kind of National Geographic presentation of nudity. If you don't say anything, your kids may not "notice" anything unusual, because in the context of the film, it isn't.

If you have watched other Tom Selleck films and liked them, you will love this one. Probably the most complex role is the part Laura San Giacomo plays, and yet, it is still not as fleshed out as it could have been.

We only have a couple hours with this group, so the story has to move along. And so it is even with Selleck's character; you see more lies under the surface with each of them, but there just isn't time.

And the slow parts are not without purpose and do not drag. If you pay attention, there really are no wasted scenes or time in this film - a rare thing these days.

Just watch the film and make up your own mind. I believe you'll find yourself smiling at the end of it, agreeing that it was worth watching.

And that is a compliment every film should aspire to. Top critical review. Reviewed in the United States on September 23, I love Tom Selleck and enjoyed watching him, but "Quigley" is such a derivative Western without a great deal of excitement or originality.

The storyline is a bit too self-righteous for my tastes as well, unrealistic, and why does Quigley himself have such a difficult time falling for the woman who calls him "Roy"?

Which is a shame because of the story that is told and how it is told. The three leading actors turn in a great performance. Although, the performance, story, and interaction between Tom Selleck and Laura San Giacomo characters are what take this movie beyond a simple western.

The movie is driven by the story and characters and not by special effects, cliches, or emphasis on flash over substance.

The dialogue is believable and appropriate for the period and setting. The story takes place in Australia and is filmed there as well which adds to what makes this such a unique movie and western.

Watching this, I see parallels that make me think that Quigley is to Australia, as Quartermain is to Africa. Almost any fan of the genre will tell you that there are three, maybe four, great modern day westerns Tombstone and Unforgiven also make the list.

The fourth movie is often forgotten or overlooked and it is Quigley Down Under. The casting in this film, starting with Tom Selleck in the lead as Matthew Quigley, is nothing short of stellar.

All the leads are perfect for the parts. Laura San Giacomo and Alan Rickman are the only other leads; both turn in memorable work helping to realize very distinctive and entertaining characters, The rest of the cast, mostly as disposable henchmen or random townsfolk, are mostly unknowns or maybe local talent.

Only one or two stand out, but you cannot fault any of their performances either. The Aborigines that appear in this film are simply amazing.

I'm always left wondering how they were cast and filmed. The personality and charm of these people comes across on film despite none of them speaking a word of English or saying anything at all.

As much as anything else in this movie, the Aborigines are key to making it all work; it would not be nearly as good without them. The setting is gorgeous and the cinematography takes full advantage of the fact.

Almost as much as the Aborigines, or in concert with them, the Australian Outback is a central character throughout.

The plot, and the way events play out to a near inevitable conclusion, is fairly predictable and hardly original. But you won't care. It is all carried off with a sense of humor, moved forward by the motivations of fully drawn characters.

The ability to provide a few laughs in the middle of some very harsh events is kind of astonishing. That is a very fine line, but Simon Wincer the director manages it all with a deft touch.

It really is remarkable. I highly recommend this film. It is easily the best thing Tom Selleck ever did on the big screen.

If you enjoy westerns and any fondness at all for Australia, this may be the perfect movie for you. Aw, who am I kidding When I noticed it had been released in a Blu Ray option, I jumped at the chance to order a copy, hoping the clarity would be that much better than DVD.

Possibly because I was watching the movie on an Ultra High Definition TV that may heighten imperfections, but quality of the video image did not appear improved beyond DVD quality.

Perhaps, this movie has not achieved critical acclaim enough to digitally re-master for Blu-Ray, but I wish they had. Meanwhile, I would still recommend purchasing this movie, and adjusting your Blu-Ray player to digitally Upscale the image.

This should greatly improve the image, and the enjoyment of watching this classic movie. A different take on the classic western. The adventures begin when Quigley lands in Freemantle after a 3 month voyage from San Francisco, and gets a surprise introduction to Texas expat Crazy Cora Laura San Giacomo and Marston's rough and tough Irish cowhands.

Throw in some beautiful Western Australia scenery, some magical Aboriginal tribes people, well choreographed fight scenes, and plenty of correct period firearms, and it all adds to up an exciting Western drama that both men and women and most kids, though the language and violence may be too much for the younger ones , as it is also a low key Love Story!

The photography is splendid, and the acting consistently good. I highly recommend this for anyone who loves action plots and good drama.

This is one of my favorite films. I just watched it for the fourth time and I enjoyed it as much now as I did in when it was released.

It features action, adventure, gun play and love. Quigley travels to Australia to help a land baron kill wild dingo dogs, he thinks.

He is possibly the best marksman in the world at long distances with his custom made rifle. He was really hired to kill Aborigines. Quigley immediately hates his new boss and beats him badly in a fight.

This is really a good film with great actors and a well written film. The scenery is very panoramic and the story just flows.

I love this film and I will probably watch it again in a few years. One person found this helpful.

Tom Selleck is always fun to watch, but add in Laura San Giacomo and the late, great Alan Rickman and you're pretty much guaranteed some fun.

Quigley is a champion long distance shooter brought to the wild west of Australia to help rid a wealthy rancher's pest problem with dingos.

Sympathische Unterhaltung. Filme von Simon Wincer.
